Macarons are all the rage right now, maybe because they are literally the cuties little dessert I have even seen, or maybe its because they taste like heaven in a little cookie. First off lets talk about what a macaron is and how to say it correctly; French Macaron (\ˌma-ka-ˈroh\) "Delicate
and airy, the French macaron has an almond, sugar and egg whites-based
shell. The shells have a light, crunchy texture on the outside and are
slightly chewy on the inside. These shells are held together by a
filling, typically made from a ganache butter-cream, meringue or jam"(http://www.mrmacaron.com/history/). The French macaron was interestingly made my the Italians in the 1500's and was considered a delicacy only for the wealthy. Not until 1997 was a bakery opened in the US that sold macarons. Francois Payard opened a restaurant on the Upper East side of Manhattan and this is how we (and Blair Waldorf) found these amazing cookies.
I teamed up with Phou from C'est L'amour Macarons to give you a little peak into making macarons. Phou started making macarons in January of 2013 and has really taken the time to master the PERFECT macaron. They sell their macarons at Tea Time Lounge in High Point NC, and also sell them online and will ship to you. Phou said their two most popular flavors were pistachio and cookies and cream, and I must agree they were both delicious. I was able to taste many different flavors my personal favorite the lavender lemon, and Matt's favorites was the strawberry and the raspberry buter cream.
We went though the process of making two macarons pistachio and Thia tea. It was so interesting to see all of the work that goes into these beautiful cookies. The process was long around 4-5 hours but the macarons are by far worth it. Phou was so generous she is going to offer all of my blog readers 10% off an order of at least a dozen or more macarons (the discount does not include shippng).
